Jim Summa has passed all of the following examinations and holds all the titles found below. By completing these rigorous courses from both the American Gem Society and the Gemological Institute of America, the two pre-eminent organizations for jewelry worldwide, Jim has gone above and beyond what most appraisers do to learn as much as possible about both precious stones and the jewelry industry so that he can deliver to you a complete, accurate and unbiased appraisal.

The Gemological Institute of America

The Gemological Institute of America was established in 1931. GIA is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. GIA exists to protect all purchasers of gemstones, by providing the education, laboratory services, research, and instruments needed to accurately and objectively determine gemstone quality.

GIA Diamond Course

Graduate GemoligistReceipt of the GIA Graduate Diamonds diploma indicates the holder has mastered the world of diamonds, learned to use the GIA International Diamond Grading System™ and the 4Cs under the trained eye of a GIA instructor, providing a solid foundation of diamond knowledge that will serve throughout the jeweler’s career.

GIA Colored Stone Course

Receipt of the GIA Graduate Colored Stones diploma indicates the holder has comprehensive knowledge about the origins of colored stones, how to identify them, and distinguish a synthetic stone from a natural.

The diploma also certifies that the jeweler has been trained to use essential gemological testing equipment such as a refractometer and polariscope and is able to detect treatments and apply GIA’s Colored Stone Grading System to evaluate a stone’s color, clarity, and quality.

GIA Graduate Gemologist

The gem and jewelry industry’s most prestigious and coveted professional credential is the GIA Graduate Gemologist diploma.

The Graduate Gemologist can identify hundreds of common and unusual gemstones and detect the latest treatments and synthetics, understands how external market factors affecting the value of diamonds, colored stones and jewelry and also has full knowledge of the history of the jewelry industry.

Graduate Gemologist have complete knowledge of time-honored identifying and grading techniques using a microscope, polariscope, spectroscope, and other professional gemological equipment and possess both technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to work throughout the industry.

The Graduate Gemologist diploma program gives the graduate the grading and identification skills essential to a skilled appraiser.

Member, The American Gem Society

Member of the American Gem SocietyThe American Gem Society (AGS) is the country's preeminent jewelry trade organization dedicated to consumer protection. Since 1934, AGS has been making it easier and safer to buy jewelry of any kind. The AGS requires yearly ongoing education to maintain the following titles.

AGS Registered Jeweler

This title certifies that the jeweler you are working with truly understands jewelry, diamonds, and gemstones. To earn this title, the associate has completed required coursework and classroom study, along with written and practical exams in diamond grading.

AGS Certified Gemologist

A Certified Gemologist has taken advanced studies in diamonds and colored gemstones. A CG also demonstrates mastery of diamond, gemstone, and precious metal testing procedures.

AGS Certified Gemologist Appraiser

This title is the most highly regarded among peers in the jewelry industry. Why? Because it certifies that the appraiser can identify diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry and determine their value. This title requires advanced training and experience in determining the value of diamonds and gemstones.
